Chapter 7 – Farewells

Cameron

That night, Cameron couldn’t sleep. After knowing the joy of holding his mate for the night, he couldn’t easily fall asleep without her. They had a Cheyenne ceremony planned for that night. Maggie had a letter written to Pastor Dan to start planning the church wedding.

Shortly after dawn, he heard Autumn leave her room and head down the stairs. Unable to sit still, Cameron got dressed and followed her down to the dining room. Tanner was already sipping on his coffee, and silently, he nodded towards the kitchen. Cameron followed the sound of women talking to find Autumn in the kitchen with Mrs. Meyers.

“Good morning,” he said, his eyes only aware of Autumn. Autumn ducked her head and smiled up at him warming his heart.

“Ah, young love,” Mrs. Meyers said as she put a tray of scrambled eggs into the oven. She smiled indulgently at them as she pulled out a plate of biscuits. Cameron wanted to beam with pride that their love was secure enough to be seen even by Mrs. Meyers.

Autumn pulled a biscuit off the tray and wrapped it in a napkin. She nodded towards the door. “I have a lot to do this morning.” She held up the letter Maggie had written last night to be dropped off at the post office. “I want to leave a message or see if I can find Little Deer at the street market. Then, head over to Stillwagon’s and collect the rest of my things. Paige only collected my clothing. I still had pictures and things. Then, I need to pick up my books and closeout at school.”

“Sounds like a busy day,” Cameron commented. He smiled his thanks when Mrs. Meyers slid a biscuit and a slice of cheddar cheese in his hand. He lifted his hand, eyes crinkling with good humor. “Looks like I’m ready to come with you.”

“He gets cheese, and I don’t?” Autumn teased Mrs. Meyers.

“Oh, get off with you,” the older woman said with a wave of her hand after handing Autumn a wedge of cheese.

“You don’t want to stay at the house?” Autumn asked as she tightened her cloak around her shoulders. The early morning air still had a nip to it as they left out of the kitchen door.

Cameron shook his head. “Let’s see. Spend a day with my beautiful fiancée or listen to wedding plans? Who do you think I’d rather spend time with?” It pleased him when Autumn flushed with delight.

“Make sure you’re home early,” Mrs. Meyers reminded them with a wave of her spoon. “Mr. Black and Mr. Standing Bear are getting things ready for tonight.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Autumn said. “We won’t be late for our own ceremony. Promise.”

Several maids came into the kitchen to begin food preparations for the day. “Looks like we’re getting out just in time,” Cameron said with a grin as the Black home became overrun with the chaos of the day. Ten guests and a joining ceremony was enough to send any home into a tailspin.
